TEDx Lubowa is an independently-organized local event that took place on July 1st, 2023 at Galaxy International School Uganda in Lubowa. The event brough together a diverse group of speakers and attendees from all walks of life, including youth, leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and global icons.
The theme of TEDx Lubowa 2023 was "Innovate, Inspire, Impact," which explored how individuals can make a positive impact in their communities by sharing innovative ideas and inspiring others.
By providing a platform for intellectual conversations, TEDx Lubowa seeks to find innovative and collaborative solutions to the challenges facing Uganda and inspire positive change. The event is aligned with TED's mission to spread ideas globally and provide licenses for individuals and groups to host local TED-style events.

These thought leaders, change-makers, and innovators came from a variety of sectors and backgrounds, including academia, business, the arts, and civil society. Douglas Onencan is a remarkable innovator and developer from Uganda. He is known for his groundbreaking inventions and commitment to using technology for humanitarian purposes. Douglas has an impressive portfolio of projects, including Eyebyorets, an assistive device for the visually impaired, and LiZ, an electric car designed to surpass Tesla's vehicles. He has also worked on the Kasuubo-x series of helicopters for agricultural spraying and locust control.
From a young age, Douglas displayed a passion for metalwork and creativity. He experimented with electronics and developed various projects, such as a local radio station and models of helicopters. Despite facing skepticism from others, Douglas continued to pursue his ideas and honed his skills in innovation and debate.
During his education at Busoga College Mwiri and Naalya SS Bweyogerere, Douglas had opportunities to further explore his interests. He engaged in experiments, research, and developed concepts like a hydrogen-based energy system and a self-sufficient electric car. He received recognition for his innovations, including being declared the best innovator in the Eastern Region.

Thatcher Mpanga Nakimuli leads the Product Design Division at Kiira Motors Corporation, the leading manufacturer of E-Mobility Solutions in Uganda, to develop innovative and ground-breaking mobility products, services and infrastructure aimed at solving the needs of the mobility non-consumers in Uganda. She has been instrumental in the development of the Kayoola EVS, the first electric bus built in Africa, for Africa; the Kiira EVS Concept, a hybrid sedan; and the establishment of the Kiira Vehicle Plant, the first green E-Mobility plant anticipated to produce 5,000 vehicles annually at full production capacity.
Thatcher Mpanga Nakimuli is also the Principal Program Officer of the Mobility Bureau at the Science Technology & Innovation Secretariat of Uganda where she is supporting value chain actors and innovators in Uganda to develop and commercialise sustainable homegrown mobility solutions that augment the national e-mobility ecosystem and are competitive for the domestic and regional market.
Thatcher is passionate about product design, innovation, emerging technologies, sustainability, and its role in enriching people’s lives. Juan de Francisco Rasheed is a leader and strategic expert with a proven track record of success. As the General Manager at M-KOPA Uganda, he manages a team of 300 staff and an extensive agent network to deliver services to 250,000 customers across the country. Under his leadership, the business grew 10x within three years. Previously, Juan played a vital role in M-KOPA’s expansion as the Group Head of Strategy and Chief of Staff to the CEO. Prior to that, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company where he advised on high-impact projects worldwide. With a diverse background, including co-founding a start-up in Beijing, publishing as a photojournalist in Beirut, and moonlighting as an open-format DJ across the region, Juan combines a passion for learning with a knack for bringing people together. Kenneth Mugabi
Kenneth Mugabi is an award-winning afro-soul artist and songwriter from Kampala, Uganda. Through his music, Mugabi empowers his listeners, particularly men, by using storytelling. His songs depict African love stories and shed light on male vulnerability. Mugabi aims to address the absence of father role models in Ugandan society and connect with young men on various aspects of their lives.
Mugabi's musical journey began in high school, where he started writing songs. This passion led him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Makerere University. However, eager to embark on his career, he left his studies to develop his unique sound as a songwriter and performer, setting himself apart from his peers.
In 2016, Mugabi released his debut album, "Kibunomu," which featured a blend of traditional ndingidi music with modern beats. The album gained popularity, particularly the tracks "Naki" and "Kibunomu." Mugabi's first concert took place in October 2018 at the National Theatre and was a sold-out show.
The following year, Mugabi released his second album, "Ugandan," which included the hit single "Kwegomba." The song received significant airplay on radio stations, contributing to the album's success. Mugabi held his second concert at the Design Hub in Kampala, which also sold out in June 2019.
As a seasoned performer, Mugabi has graced various concerts and events, including the Bayimba arts festival, DoaDoa, Bell All-star Concert, Jazz Safari (alongside Mya and Geniwine), Roast and Rhyme, Blankets and Wine, and the North America Association Convention in Boston, USA. In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he organized Uganda's first paid online concert when live shows were canceled due to lockdown measures. In 2021, he performed for the American Embassy in Uganda on American Independence Day.
Dr. Stella Nyanzi, a prominent Ugandan human rights activist, praised Mugabi's music for incorporating Luganda metaphors, riddles, proverbs, allegories, and legendary characters that revive the Baganda culture. She admired the dramatic elements in his music videos, ranging from comedic to tragic, and highlighted the humor, mischief, and cheekiness present in his songs. Mugabi's big flashy smile is known to brighten any day.
Recently, Mugabi released his third album, "People of the Land," in February 2022. This album explores themes beyond love stories and addresses pressing issues facing Ugandans, such as environmental degradation, gender-based violence, tribalism, and youth empowerment.
To celebrate his journey and growth in music, Kenneth Mugabi will be hosting the "PEOPLE OF THE LAND CONCERT" on June 30, 2023, at WIN 5 Hotel And Spa (formerly Pearl Of Africa Hotel). It will be an opportunity for him to connect with his loyal fans who have supported him throughout his musical career.

Atwiine Sabrina is a promising student of Law, but interestingly, one that is mostly seen thriving in Tech Entrepreneurship spaces. She is the Founder/CEO of an award-winning youth-led startup in Uganda called Nimarungi. The startup harnesses the power of data and information, capacity-building programs, and other employability practical skill sets to eradicate education inequality, increase student resilience, and smoothen their transition from school to work.
Sabrina has also done extraordinary work as a youth/student leader on school, national, and global levels. Her 8+ years of experience as a leader extend across team building, result-oriented project management, recruiting members, mentoring and motivating them, as well as institution strengthening. She has dedicated most of her time to coming up with strategies harmonizing processes, people, and technology.
Prior to founding Nimarungi, Sabrina worked with Technovation as a student ambassador where she recruited, mentored, and motivated over 50 girls in Kabale district and trained them in business development, pitching, and coding with MIT App inventor for the Technovation Challenge. Later on, during her high school vacation, she worked with Oysters and Pearls as an Assistant Director for women/girls program where she mentored over 150 girls and trained them in business development as well as business pitching.
One of Sabrina’s biggest achievements is the Undergraduate Talent Tech and Entrepreneurship Programme (UTTEP) she conceptualized, led, and launched early this year. UTTEP is an 8-week program aiming at supporting university students to discover, monetize, and scale their talent, skills, technological innovations, and business initiatives. The program is spread throughout the academic year, and the launch day invited over 200 university students from various universities across the central region of Uganda who exhibited their products and went through training on product and business development, funding, and storytelling.
Outside of work, Sabrina loves talking to people and understanding their thought processes and behaviors. She enjoys taking walks, analyzing surroundings, observing daily human activities, listening to music, and even dancing, despite not being very skilled at it. She finds self-development and intellectual books fascinating and has recently started painting, showing fair proficiency. While she prefers staying indoors, she considers creating and building things from scratch not just work, but also a hobby. Sabrina believes in the concept of randomness and acknowledges her complicated personality, which can be both incredibly sociable and affected by social anxiety.
Her future goals revolve around her startup Nimarungi, aiming to become the response everyone has been looking for in the Ugandan Education System by introducing more meaningful learning approaches to increase resilience and a growth mindset among learners. In the near future, they intend to build more realistic and impactful performance assessment tools than traditional examination grades. On a personal level, within the next 5 years, Sabrina is working towards blending Law and Technology.

My name is Mbanda Shyaka, 45 years old. I'm married to Sylvia Shyaka and a father of 2 boys, Ssuubi, 19 and Neeza, 16. At Makerere University, I studied Bachelor of Food science and technology. I live in Akright city, Bwebajja, Entebbe Road where I'm an active community member as Minister of ICT also as a Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Akright.
I'm an entrepreneur with CodeImpact Ltd which is a company I run with my brother Alex Shyaka. We are involved in running clubs in schools where we teach Coding, Robotics and Digital Animation skills.
I also run a personal side project in the cottage industry where I add value to locally sourced Shea butter to create natural skin and hair products under the brand name Karibu Shop. Our products have helped many ladies manage Pimples and dark spots as well as helping them glow naturally.
I'm a humane technologist, having just graduated from the Centre for Humane Technology in Silicon Valley, USA. My mission is to use my knowledge to advocate against extractive technologies like social media by shedding light on the harms they propagate in our society. I would also like to inspire African technologists to take on a humane perspective while developing software products.
The majority of my time is spent cultivating my body and mind so as to expand my consciousness to enable me live up to my highest potential. I cultivate myself using a mix of exercises, meditation, breath work qigong and daily study sessions . My goal is to use my discipleship as an inspiration for African youth to stand up, be strong and be counted.

Nantege Regina (Regis) is a Dietitian/ Nutritionist with 5 years of experience in improving health using diet therapy.
She is the Founder of Impact Nutrition Company where she leads a team of Dietitians that design easy-to-adopt and sustainable diet behaviour change programs. We are maximizing digital technologies with our recently launched mobile application called Lya Dietitian App. “Lya” is a word meaning Eat in the Luganda language used in Central Uganda. The mobile application provides pictorial healthy meal guidance using a variety of locally available ingredients aligned to the individual’s recommended medical nutrition therapy, budget, daily schedule and preferences.
Regina won an award for Outstanding Nutrition Therapist of the Year 2022 as declared by the Nutrition Society of Uganda.
Regina holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Kyambogo University, Uganda (2017) and is currently undertaking a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition (2020/2023) Regina keeps fit by running and loves hiking. She has summited some of Africa’s highest points like the Rwenzori Mountains’ snowcapped Margherita Peak and Mt. Elgon and wishes to encourage each of us to support local tourism. Equally, we must support our local food production to shorten the food chain and as we maximise the nourishment from fresh foods.

We are maximizing digital technologies with our recently launched mobile application called Lya Dietitian App. “Lya” is a word meaning Eat in the Luganda language used in Central Uganda. The mobile application provides pictorial healthy meal guidance using a variety of locally available ingredients aligned to the individual’s recommended medical nutrition therapy, budget, daily schedule and preferences.
Regina won an award for Outstanding Nutrition Therapist of the Year 2022 as declared by the Nutrition Society of Uganda.
Regina holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Kyambogo University, Uganda (2017) and is currently undertaking a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition (2020/2023) Regina keeps fit by running and loves hiking. She has summited some of Africa’s highest points like the Rwenzori Mountains’ snowcapped Margherita Peak and Mt. Elgon and wishes to encourage each of us to support local tourism. Equally, we must support our local food production to shorten the food chain and as we maximise the nourishment from fresh foods.

Thatcher Mpanga Nakimuli leads the Product Design Division at Kiira Motors Corporation, the leading manufacturer of E-Mobility Solutions in Uganda, to develop innovative and ground-breaking mobility products, services and infrastructure aimed at solving the needs of the mobility non-consumers in Uganda. She has been instrumental in the development of the Kayoola EVS, the first electric bus built in Africa, for Africa; the Kiira EVS Concept, a hybrid sedan; and the establishment of the Kiira Vehicle Plant, the first green E-Mobility plant anticipated to produce 5,000 vehicles annually at full production capacity.
